Non-league footballer Richie Jordan was 33 when he lost his life following a crash on the A19 near Houghton.

Hundreds gathered to pay their respects and say goodbye to the dad-of-one, from Grangetown, at a touching funeral service held in Sunderland earlier this month.

And now, those who knew and loved Richie have joined together once more to create a lasting memorial to the “lovely lad” and well-respected footballer.

Donations are being sought to help fund a memorial bench on the seafront at Sunderland in a permanent tribute to the 33-year-old, who previously played for Sunderland RCA, Ryhope CW and in the city’s Sunday League.

Richie’s partner Carol King, 27, said his parents, Veronica and Mike, have many fond memories of their son at the seafront from his childhood.

It’s also a place they have taken their granddaughter, Richie and Carol’s daughter Quinn, aged 19 months, since she was born.

Carol said a bench would provide an alternative place to Richie’s grave, at Grangetown Cemetery, to visit – and it would be somewhere for her to reflect, talk and visit with her little girl.

The three of them also spent many days together at the seafront creating memories as a family.

Carol added: “He won’t be forgotten and will be with us always.

“This means so much to Richard’s mam, dad and sister so it would be amazing to get this bench for them.”

Richie is also survived by his sister Olivia, 30.

The fundraiser was started by family friend Kate Reay, who posted on JustGiving and said: “In loving memory of Richard Jordan. It has been decided to arrange a memorial bench at the seafront.

“We feel this would be a fitting tribute to him where family and friends can visit to remember him.”

Dozens of donations towards the fundraiser’s £3,000 target have been made so far.
