Sunderland confirm transfer deal for ex-Liverpool striker after 23-goal contribution campaign
Sunderland have confirmed a temporary departure as one of their young forwards takes the next step in his development
Sunderland have confirmed that former Liverpool academy striker Marcus Neill has joined Morecambe on a one-month loan.
The 18-year-old will remain with the National League North side until November 19, taking the next step in his development after signing his first professional contract during the summer. The move offers Neill an opportunity to gain senior experience away from the Academy of Light after an encouraging spell in Sunderland’s youth ranks.
Confirming the departure, Sunderland said: “Sunderland AFC can confirm that Marcus Neill has joined Morecambe on a one-month loan. The 18-year-old, who signed his first professional contract in the summer, joins the National League North side until November 19. Best of luck, Marcus!”
Neill joined Sunderland from Liverpool’s academy in 2024 and has since established himself as a productive attacking prospect. The Echo reported in May that Sunderland had opened contract talks with the teenager following an impressive campaign before the striker officially put pen to paper.

At that stage, he had registered 16 goals and seven assists in 30 appearances across all competitions, with a hat-trick against Everton taking him to 23 direct goal contributions. That treble came during a 4-0 victory for Sunderland’s under-18s at the Academy of Light and underlined his goalscoring potential.
Neill is the son of former Australia international and Premier League defender Lucas Neill, who has supported the youngster’s development. His immediate challenge will be adapting to senior opposition at Morecambe, where the loan gives him a chance to build experience before returning to compete for opportunities on Wearside in November.
