Luke O’Nien apologised to Nordi Mukiele and praised Sunderland’s efforts after their goalless draw with Leeds United in difficult conditions

Luke O’Nien has apologised to Sunderland teammate Nordi Mukiele following a freak injury incident during Sunday’s goalless draw with Leeds United.

The defender shared a message on Instagram after the Premier League fixture at the Stadium of Light, where strong winds made conditions difficult for both sides. His post included an apology to Mukiele and reassurance that his teammate was okay after catching the Frenchman in the throat with his arm during a freak incident. O’Nien also praised Sunderland’s performance, thanked supporters for their backing and celebrated Chris Rigg’s 100th appearance for the club.

Alongside a photograph of himself embracing the academy graduate, he wrote: “A well-earned point today. A strong performance from everyone, even in that wind,” followed by a weary face emoji. He continued: “Very happy to see my mate Riggy play his 100th Sunderland game too. What a player!! Thank you for sticking with us throughout the game. Onto the next!” he added, alongside a heart emoji. “Really sorry to my mate Nordi. Glad to see you are ok,” O’Nien concluded, adding another heart emoji.

The draw ended Sunderland’s four-match Premier League losing run and moved Régis Le Bris’ side onto five points from their opening eight matches. Although they were unable to find a winning goal, a clean sheet offered encouragement following their recent struggles.

Supporters applauded the players and Le Bris after the final whistle, acknowledging their efforts in the difficult conditions. O’Nien’s message reflected that appreciation, while his tribute to Rigg recognised another milestone for a player who has progressed through Sunderland’s academy to establish himself in the senior first-team squad.
