Carabao Cup fourth round: Sunderland & Newcastle United's potential opponents and when draw takes place

Sunderland progressed into the Carabao Cup fourth round with a home win against Premier League rivals Hull City.

Sunderland took a successful first step on the road to Wembley after claiming a narrow home win in their Carabao Cup third round tie with Premier League rivals Hull City.

After a hectic start to the new campaign and with challenging league and Europa League fixtures lying in wait, Regis Le Bris opted to ring the changes within his starting eleven as they looked to claim place in the last 16 of the competition with a home win against the Tigers.

A neat finish from Chemsdine Talbi was enough to help Sunderland progress as the Morocco international raced in behind the visitors defence before producing a stunning dinked finish over goalkeeper Dillon Phillips to put his side into the hat for the next round. The likes of Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are also in the draw - but when will they discover their last-16 fate?

What has Regis Le Bris said about the Carabao Cup?

Speaking after Tuesday’s win, the Black Cats head coach gave an insight into how he views the Carabao Cup as he balances it alongside the demands of the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup. He said: “With eleven changes, it's clear that it's not easy for the players to find the references. We train together, but the reality is always the competition. I think we started well, with good energy. After that we had a more difficult period, less composed probably. The beginning of the second half was much better, we imposed our intensity, we scored, which was important. After that, in the last part of the game, they pushed a bit but we stayed solid.

“With this competition, I think we go step by step. These guys showed today that they are competitive. We played with 11 new players, which means that we have eleven others from the game against Brentford. So we have 22 at the minute and with that we can play every competition. With injuries we'll see but at the minute we're happy to go forward.”

What prize money did Sunderland receive for Hull City win?

The Carabao Cup prize money structure means clubs do not earn prize money until they reach the semi-final where winning clubs receive £25,000. The beaten finalists receive £50,000 and the winners of the competition get £100,000.
