Washington dog grooming service aims to offer day care services
A Wearside dog grooming business could expand to offer dog day care services under new plans.
The application to Sunderland City Council’s planning department is for 3-4 Heworth Road, in Concord, Washington.
There is an existing dog grooming business at the site and new plans from applicant Alicia Thorp are seeking permission to offer extra services and accommodate more customers.
This includes diversifying the site to create a new dog day care facility within the existing commercial premises while retaining the established dog grooming business.

As part of the plans, the existing dog grooming facilities would be relocated into a smaller room within the building, with the main floorspace used to accommodate the proposed dog day care use.
Planning documents state the development would “accommodate a maximum of 6–7 additional dogs for day care, alongside the existing 3–4 daily grooming clients”.
An accompanying planning statement notes the hours of operation are limited to daytime hours and “do not extend into early morning and later evening periods where residents can reasonably expect peace and quiet”.
It was also noted that there would be two collection periods which would help manage parking and vehicle movements around the site.

The planning statement said the proposed facility would reduce “the need for residents to travel further afield for dog day care services”.
A decision on the planning application is expected following a consultation.
