Sunderland winger Malick Fofana has opened up about his difficult start after scoring against Brentford
Malick Fofana has admitted his relief at finally scoring his first Sunderland goal, thanking supporters for continuing to believe in him despite a difficult start to life on Wearside.
The Belgian winger opened his account during Wednesday evening's entertaining 3-2 Carabao Cup victory over Brentford, heading home Jocelin Ta Bi's cross as Régis Le Bris' much-changed side secured a place in the quarter-finals.

Fofana has endured a frustrating opening few months following his summer move to the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland's struggles in the Premier League making it difficult for the youngster to consistently demonstrate his attacking qualities. However, the winger was delighted to finally get off the mark, particularly in front of the supporters who have continued to sing his name despite his slow start.
"Yeah, a relief. I'm very happy, finally, you can say, but I worked very hard, so I've been patient, and I'm very happy with my goal," Fofana told The Echo. “It's always a good feeling to score at home; with the fans, they support us every day, every time. So, yeah, I'm very happy to give them something back."
Fofana's overall display was also encouraging, with the winger demonstrating greater confidence in possession and working hard defensively as Sunderland produced one of their most entertaining performances of the campaign. The former Lyon man acknowledged that adapting to his new surroundings has taken time, but insisted his teammates have helped him settle. "For me, I had a normal pre-season. So, yeah, I'm adapting, but the lads always help me a lot. It will be no problem. They're (fans) there for me. I have some problems, so I can count on them."
Despite Sunderland's difficult league form, Fofana is determined to build on his breakthrough moment when the Black Cats travel to Coventry City on Saturday with Le Bris’ side in desperate need of a win in the Premier League after slipping to bottom after eight games. “I work hard every day, so I hope I can continue like this, but also the team. The win was very important, so I hope Saturday we can continue."
