Sunderland team news explained as Régis Le Bris makes eleven changes for cup clash

Sunderland are back in Carabao Cup action when they face Brentford on Wednesday evening

Régis Le Bris has made eleven to his Sunderland side to face Brentford in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

Kevin Danso returns to the starting XI following his one-game suspension, and will captain the side with Luke O'Nien now in pole position to play against Coventry City in the Premier League this weekend. Alan Browne makes his first start of the season and looks set to fill in at right back, with Jules Ahoka and Habib Diarra in midfield and Chemsdine Talbi playing off the main striker as he did in the previous round against Hull City.

Thomas Meunier is back on the bench after a hamstring issue, with Sunderland's plan being to give Meunier some minutes in the second half to pave the way for greater involvement in the crucial clash at Coventry. Wilson Isidor does not make the squad as he continues his recovery from a knock, but Le Bris has previously hinted that he could be in contention this weekend. Sunderland have taken no risks with the senior players, who by and large have been left out the squad entirely. O'Nien and Chris Rigg are on the bench for cover but otherwise the squad is made up of U21 players.

One surprise is that Juan Riquelme is not included in the squad at all. The striker played 45 minutes in the U21s 3-2 defeat to Newcastle United at St James' Park on Monday evening.

Sunderland XI: Ellborg; Browne, Danso, Alderete, Methalie; Ahoka, Diarra; Talbi, Ta Bi, Fofana, Tutierov

Subs: Moore, O'Nien, Rigg, Meunier, Proctor, Whittaker, Jenson Jones, Ogunsuyi, Scott

Sunderland are set for a very stern test against Brentford, who have made changes but nevertheless fielded a side packed with Premier League experience. Vitaly Janelt comes straight into the XI following his suspension, while Callum Wilson and Igor Thiago both start.
