See the brilliant new mural in Sunderland paying tribute to FA Cup final hero
A new mural in Sunderland has been completed
A new mural paying tribute to 1937 FA Cup hero Eddie Burbanks has been completed.
The mural completes a trio of club tributes to the goalscorers who saw Sunderland lift the famous cup for the first time at Wembley, fighting back from 1-0 down at half time against Preston North End to win 3-1. Murals paying tribute to Raich Carter and Bobby Gurney already existed in Hendon and Silksworth, and the club have moved to ensure that the role of Burbanks is fully recognised.
The new mural was created by artist Frank Styles, and sits on the Cambridge Arms in Roker looking towards the site of the club's iconic former ground Roker Park.

Styles said: “This mural completes the trio of goalscorers from the 1937 FA Cup final, alongside Raich Carter in Hendon and Bobby Gurney in Silksworth. I’ve had some great feedback, including from people whose families knew Eddie. Murals like this help keep the spirit of community alive. Yes, it was a long time ago, but I think it’s magical to imagine that your actions might still be remembered 90 years later. The Cambridge Arms is a great place for this painting, as Eddie is looking towards the site of the old Roker Park stadium, and the locals couldn’t have been more welcoming.”
Cambridge Arms landlord and lifelong Sunderland supporter Paul Maxfield, who is also a season ticket holder, said: “I feel incredibly proud and honoured. It’s more than a mural to me – it’s a piece of our heritage, our pride and our passion. It will be a talking point at our pub for generations to come. Sunderland AFC will always be at the heart of the Cambridge Arms and our local community. It’s an honour and a privilege to have the great Eddie Burbanks pictured on our pub wall.”
Sunderland said the mural was part of their ongoing 'commitment to celebrating the people, places and moments that have shaped the Club’s identity, ensuring its history remains visible and accessible within the communities that make Sunderland special.'
