'It's been such an exciting journey' - Varo Lounge opens in Sunderland

“It’s been such an exciting journey,” says the general manager at Sunderland’s newest hospitality hot spot.

The prime corner unit beneath Holiday Inn in Keel Square has been empty since the development was completed in 2022, but has been brought to life in colourful style by national hospitality group, Loungers.

Varo Lounge is the 281st UK venue in the ‘Lounge’ brand and opens today, October 28.

The unit has been decorated with hundreds of vintage style prints, tasseled lampshades and retro fabrics and is now one of the largest cafe / bars in the city centre.

The opening has created 30 jobs for the city and general manager, Shannon Kinghorn, says there’s been a lot of anticipation for opening.

“It’s been such an exciting journey,” she said. “I’m from the local area and to see what’s happening in Sunderland and all the development in the city centre is crazy.

“We’re between the Stadium of Light and Sunderland Empire, it’s such a great location.”

She added: “Community is a big part of the company. The aim is for every customer to leave happy and that’s what we’re aiming to bring to Sunderland.

“We’ll be hosting lots of different events including parent and baby, events for teenagers and lots happening over Christmas.”

As part of the Lounge Aid charity initiative, the new addition will also be supporting Bradley Lowery Foundation as its chosen charity.

Varo Lounge is now open all day, every day, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks, with dedicated kids’, gluten‑free and vegan menus.

The chain joins The Botanist, Keel Tavern and The Flower Cafe beneath Holiday Inn to complete the development, which plays a key role in Keel Square.

It’s also set to help cater for visitors to nearby Culture House.

*Note, Varo Lounge closes at 4pm today, October 28 for an event, and reopens at 8pm.
