'A proper little shopping centre' - the picture of Sunderland's Villette Road which got you talking

That’s how many of you spotted the 1959 photo of Villette Road which we shared on our Wearside Echoes Facebook page.

It got you talking and reflecting on a street which was packed with great shops back then.

Potatoes and a pet shop

Janusz Lewandowski: I remember it like this a proper little shopping centre. Me mam sending me out for half a stone of potatoes. Michele Arkley: There was a pet shop on Villette Road I used to look at the tortoises around 1955-6.

A barbers at the bottom of the street

Barbara Russell nee Foulds: Loved villette road great shop yrs ago and the Library.

Les Golding: My mum used to take me to the barbers down the bottom near Valley Road, late 1950’s Christine Finn: Remember joining the library there and going to a nearby sweetshop sometimes Patsy Almond: Brilliant photo. Great memories.
