New College Durham is celebrating the remarkable achievements of a level 3 sports coaching student whose rapid rise in competitive rowing is earning recognition at regional and national levels.
Hayden MacDonald, who has been rowing for less than four years with Sunderland Rowing Club, has enjoyed an exceptional season, securing a second-place finish overall and first place in the club category at Nottingham Regatta in May.
He also came third place in the men's under-21 single sculls event as part of the British Rowing Olympic Pathway competition, competing against some of the country's most promising young athletes.
Speaking about his recent achievements, Hayden said: "Achieving these medals has motivated me to push myself further and compete at an even higher standard."

Hayden also came third place in the men's single sculls at the Northern Beach Sprints Cup and received the Sports Newcastle Unsung Hero Award.
The awards took place in June and play their part in celebrating regional volunteers, coaches and community champions.
Hayden is now setting his sights on qualifying for the prestigious Henley Regatta, widely regarded as one of the most iconic and respected events in the rowing calendar.
Charlotte Winnard, sport lecturer at New College Durham, praised Hayden's accomplishments and commitment to his development – both in and out of the classroom.
She said: "Hayden's achievements are a fantastic example of what can be accomplished through dedication, hard work and a genuine passion for sport.
"To have reached this level within four years of taking up rowing is a truly remarkable achievement.
"He consistently demonstrates the commitment, professionalism and determination that we encourage across all of our sport programmes.
"Everyone within the New College Durham sports team is incredibly proud of what Hayden has achieved so far and we are excited to see where his journey takes him next."
Hayden's accomplishments serve as an inspiration to fellow students and highlight the opportunities available to those willing to combine ambition with dedication.
As he continues his pursuit of national success and prepares for future competitions, the entire college community “wishes Hayden every success in the next stage of his rowing career”.
