Sunderland named among UK’s best places for student nightlife in 2026
For students deciding where to study, university life is not only about courses and accommodation. The cost of a night out, how easy it is to get home and the number of places available after dark can all influence the student experience.

A new study by Lesson Maker Pro compared 55 UK university cities and towns across drink and food prices, nightlife venues, safety, student population and online nightlife popularity to identify the best places for student nightlife in 2026.
Sunderland has emerged as one of the UK’s higher-ranking student nightlife destinations, placing 15th overall among the 55 locations analysed.
Affordability is one of Sunderland’s biggest strengths. A domestic pint costs an average of just £3.50, making it the third-cheapest location in the entire study for beer, behind only Kingston upon Hull and Bradford at £3.25.
Getting home after a night out is also comparatively inexpensive. Sunderland records a taxi starting cost or 1km journey of just £0.99, putting it among the cheapest locations analysed.
Late-night food remains relatively affordable too, with the average fast food combo costing £6.50, while cocktails average £8.00.
Sunderland also performs strongly for safety compared with many larger student cities. Its walking-alone-at-night safety score stands at 57.89, placing it ahead of locations including Cambridge, Canterbury, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and London.
The city records 3.42 bars and pubs per 10,000 people, alongside 0.34 nightclubs, 0.46 live music venues and 1.85 late-night food venues open past 11pm per 10,000 residents.
There are 416 students per 10,000 people in Sunderland, while the city records 1.57 TikTok nightlife hashtags and 40.42 Google searches for a “night out in Sunderland” per 10,000 residents.
Together, these factors give Sunderland an overall nightlife score of 35.02, enough to place the city inside the UK’s top 15.
Its 15th-place position puts Sunderland ahead of several well-known student and nightlife destinations, including Liverpool, Cardiff, Dundee, Brighton and Hove, Oxford, Sheffield, Glasgow, Bristol, Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, London and Manchester.
St Andrews takes the top spot nationally with an overall score of 74.58. The Scottish university town has 32.74 bars and pubs per 10,000 people, the highest figure in the study, as well as 6,667 students per 10,000 residents.
Aberystwyth ranks second with a score of 63.54, helped by £3.75 pints and the highest nightclub density in the ranking at 3.20 per 10,000 people.
Durham places third and performs particularly strongly for safety. Its walking-alone-at-night score of 72.39 is the highest of any location analysed, while it also records the highest TikTok nightlife popularity at 77.43 hashtags per 10,000 people.
Cambridge and Leeds complete the top five, followed by Lancaster, Stirling, Canterbury, Bath and Lincoln.
Leeds records the highest Google search demand for a night out at 1,335 searches per 10,000 people, while Lincoln has the cheapest taxi cost in the study at just £0.75.
