The Black Cats won their first match following the appointment of Tony Mowbray after beating Rotherham 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Mowbray held an introductory press conference today, while Sunderland’s Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman will be present following the end of the transfer window.

Here’s what was said at the Academy of Light:

RECAP: Tony Mowbray press conference

Key Events

  • The transfer window has closed after a quiet deadline day for Sunderland.
  • The Black Cats will now prepare for Monday’s trip to Middlesbrough.
  • New head coach Tony Mowbray is set to hold an introductory press conference at 1pm today.
  • Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman will be present following the end of the transfer window.

We’ll start by looking at the club’s transfer business following a quiet deadline day for the Black Cats.

Sunderland were hopeful they could make one or two more additions on the final day of the window, yet nothing materialised.

The Black Cats were trying to sign another centre-back following Daniel Ballard’s injury setback, yet a loan deal for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke fell through.

Another striker to provide cover for Ross Stewart and Ellis Simms would have also been welcomed.

Sunderland were linked with a late move for former goalkeeper Vito Mannone but, while they did explore the possibility of adding experienced stopper to their ranks, club sources have indicated that they are happy with the squad and business done this summer.

Carl Winchester has also been allowed to leave on loan to join Shrewsbury, while Sunderland have an option to recall him in January.
