What Ajax manager Francesco Farioli has said about Jordan Henderson amid ongoing Sunderland transfer links
Sunderland continue to be linked with a January swoop for Henderson
Ajax manager Francesco Farioli has claimed that Jordan Henderson is an “exceptional player” as the veteran midfielder continues to be linked with a sensational return to Sunderland.
The 34-year-old is understood to be considering a move away from the Dutch giants in January due to a lack of consistent game time, with the Stadium of Light touted as one prospective destination. In recent days, it has been suggested that the Black Cats have already made contact over a potential deal, while Henderson himself is said to be open to the notion of returning to his boyhood club.
But his current manager has seemingly cast doubt over a winter exit by reiterating the importance of the role that he believes Henderson fulfils in his squad. In a recent interview, as quoted by Tribal Football, Farioli - himself linked with Sunderland last summer - said: "He [Henderson] is an exceptional player who possesses great quality and leadership.

"Having captained his team to a Champions League victory, I believe he can effectively communicate the essence of a winning mentality and a strong work ethic. There are many valuable ways in which he can make a significant contribution to a young team like ours."
So far this season, Henderson has played 189 minutes of Eredivisie football, spread across five appearances. Over the course of that spell, however, he has started just twice, and completed a full 90 minutes on just one occasion. He has featured more prominently in continental competition, registering seven outings across Europa League qualifying and group stage proper thus far.
Speaking on talkSPORT recently, former Sunderland striker Darren Bent suggested that a return to Wearside would be ideal for Henderson as he approaches the twilight of his career. He said: “Going back to Sunderland makes sense. That’s his club. That’s where he started. That’s where I played with him. The fans would love him as well, and he’s had an unbelievable career. When you look back, what he’s won, what he’s done for England. He’s had an incredible career.”
