‘Time for him to go’ – Sunderland fans vent at Régis Le Bris and Granit Xhaka after Dinamo defeat
Sunderland fans criticised Régis Le Bris and Granit Xhaka after a frustrating Europa League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb
Sunderland supporters have questioned Régis Le Bris’ tactics and future after a disappointing Europa League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats were booed following another frustrating performance, having also lost to Coventry City in the Premier League at the weekend. Le Bris made six changes to his starting side, but an improved second half was not enough to repair the damage.
The Sunderland head coach used all five substitutions, although the lack of a change in formation became a major talking point among supporters. Fans questioned the team’s intensity, approach in possession and individual performances as frustration spilled onto social media.

However, while several called for a managerial change, others argued that Le Bris deserves time to turn things around. Among those questioning the tactical approach was @tongey93, who wrote: “This is what I don’t get at all. No change of shape or style, even with the changes. Baffled. It feels like he has given up.”
Granit Xhaka’s performance and the defensive selections also came under scrutiny from @TheMackemRacer. They wrote: “No intensity. Sloppy, soft, couldn’t even pass the ball to each other. Marginally better with the subs. The elephant in the room is Xhaka. A shadow of last season’s Goliath. A big decision to be made. Needs to pick a back four he thinks is best and stick with it.”
For some supporters, the desire for change was accompanied by gratitude for Le Bris’ previous achievements. @TrevorWarr14111 wrote: “I will always be thankful for some of the best memories Régis has given me. He did a great job taking us to the Premier League and finishing seventh last season. This season has been very different. I hate to say it, but it’s time for him to go.”
Others argued that responsibility stretched beyond the dugout, with @GaryLisle criticising the players, coaches and home support while praising the travelling Dinamo fans. They wrote: “We’re not as good as we thought we were. The players, coaches and support have to be better against Chelsea if we are going to turn this around!”

Yet calls for Le Bris to leave were not unanimous, with @NICU_doc_salone concerned about returning to Sunderland’s previous managerial instability. They wrote: “I’m very frustrated, and I’m not sure how it changes. But I’m afraid of the seven-managers-in-five-seasons days again. He might never be able to fix it, but I think consistency is important, so I favour keeping RLB for now. We don’t have a great record with managerial changes.”
Meanwhile, @EthDam073 pointed to the second-half improvement and disputed suggestions from other supporters that Le Bris had lost the dressing room. They wrote: “I don’t think the second half was horrendous. Dinamo didn’t have a look-in. The ball just wouldn’t go in the net. Players worked hard. I don’t think it seems as though Régis has lost the dressing room. I think it’s just a spell, low on confidence on and off the ball.”
Attention now turns to Chelsea and the need for a response. The reactions show clear disagreement over whether changing the head coach would help. What unites supporters is frustration with performances and a desire to see improvement on the pitch.
