Sunderland’s odds to finish in the top half of the Premier League cut
The latest Sunderland news ahead of Leeds United trip, writes Robbie Fenwick.
Sunderland’s odds to finish in the top half of the Premier League have been cut after Saturday’s hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.
Eliezer Mayenda’s opener was cancelled out by Evanilson’s finish on the South Coast but the result keeps the Black Cats just two points off tenth place. Sunderland travel to Leeds United tonight knowing a win at Elland Road could take them into the top half of the table depending on Bournemouth’s result against Brentford.
Oddschecker spokesman Chris Rogers said: “Bettors have piled in on Sunderland for a top half finish with a whopping 91% of bets backing the Black Cats to muscle their way into the top 10 come the end of the season. “Regis Le Bris’ side have seen their odds cut from 4/1 to 11/4 following a hard-earned point away at Bournemouth on Saturday.
“Sunderland were as big as 40/1 for a top half finish before a ball was kicked this season which shows testament to the fantastic work Le Bris and his players have done in their first campaign back in the Premier League.” Sunderland were as short as 2/9 to get relegated at the start of the season so talk of a top half finish shows just how impressive Regis Le Bris’ side have been.
Premier League Top Half betting odds
Brentford 1/16
Fulham 4/9
Everton 5/6
Newcastle 5/6
Bournemouth 10/11
Brighton 6/5
Sunderland 11/4
Crystal Palace 6/1
Leeds 8/1
Tottenham 12/1
Which games will be crucial for achieving a top half finish?
Regis Le Bris’ side have to travel to St James’ Park later this month for the Tyne Wear derby but as much as this game may be the most anticipated, it is unlikely to define Sunderland’s season. If the Black Cats are to finish in the top ten, their home form will be vital. Only Arsenal and Manchester City have lost fewer matches at home this season than Sunderland.
The Black Cats have five Premier League home games remaining this season - Brighton, Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Chelsea. Sunderland also have to face bottom of the league Wolves at Molineux in May, a game which they will hope to win despite Wolves’ upturn in form.

Regis Le Bris ahead of Leeds
Sunderland travel to Elland Road knowing a positive result can close the gap on the European spots and take them into the top half. Speaking ahead of the game Le Bris said: “Leeds are doing well. They have a clear identity, a strong pressing team with the ability to go direct but they are comfortable to build short as well.
“They are well coached with a great atmosphere at Elland Road so they built over a few years. Last season they were really strong and it wasn't a surprise the outcome at the end of the season.”
