Inspector Clare, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, was speaking after the sentencing of 21-year-old James Waddell who pleaded guilty to causing the death of much loved family man, Paul Andrew Fulcher. Last week Waddell returned to Newcastle Crown Court where he was sentenced to seven years and six months in jail.

The two vehicle collision between a Subaru Forrester and a Volkswagen Tiguan took place on April 14, 2025, on the A690 Durham Road in Sunderland. Paul, 53, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but sadly died 11 days later.

As part of their investigation, police officers found that Waddell was driving the Subaru in a 30mph zone at an estimated speed of 72mph immediately before the collision.

Additionally, the Subaru was found to have had defective brakes.

Speaking after the sentencing, Inspector Clare said: “Firstly, we would like to pay tribute to Andrew’s family and loved ones for the strength, patience and composure they have shown throughout these proceedings.

“Waddell’s actions were incredibly reckless and dangerous and have resulted in a beloved dad and grandad tragically losing his life.

“No outcome at court will ever fill the void felt by Andrew’s family in losing him, however I hope the fact Waddell is now behind bars brings them a sense of closure as they look to move forward.

“Andrew’s death could have been avoided altogether, and we’re committed to cracking down on drivers who flout the law and put people at risk.

“Our message is clear, as a driver of any vehicle, if you drive dangerously and your actions result in someone’s death, then expect to be prosecuted and go to prison.”

Waddell was also handed a driving ban for 11 years and he will face requirements to take an extended test in the future.
