Sunderland face January transfer catch that could complicate plans for Florent Ghisolfi and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus

UEFA’s registration rules mean arrivals eligible to play in the Premier League would not automatically be available for European selection. That distinction could prove significant for Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Florent Ghisolfi, with Sunderland’s league-phase campaign continuing through the winter transfer window.

The Black Cats visit Anderlecht on January 21 before hosting Levski Sofia on January 28. Under the normal registration process, new signings would have to wait until the knockout phase to make their European debuts.

Why January signings would have to wait

Sunderland’s European squad is registered separately from their domestic squad. The opening of the January transfer window does not give clubs a fresh opportunity to rewrite their Europa League list immediately.

Instead, teams progressing beyond the league phase can register up to three new eligible players before the knockout rounds. The deadline is February 4, 2027, at 11.59pm CET. For Sunderland, that means an early signing could be available to help in the Premier League while remaining unavailable for the trips and matches that determine their European progress.

New arrivals could compete with existing players for places

Those three additions are not reserved for January recruits. Sunderland could also use them to register players already at the club who were omitted from their original European squad.

Chemsdine Talbi and Jocelin Ta Bi are both absent from UEFA’s currently published Sunderland list. Should Sunderland want to include either for the knockout phase, they would need to be considered alongside any new arrivals. The squad limit and locally trained player requirements would still apply.

There is no automatic bar on signing someone who has already represented another club in Europe this season. UEFA allows those players to be registered for the knockout phase within the permitted allocation. Sunderland must first secure their passage. The top eight advance directly to the round of 16, while teams finishing ninth to 24th enter February’s two-legged play-offs. Any January recruitment could strengthen Le Bris’ options for those rounds, but would not provide an immediate solution for the final two league-phase games.
