Sunderland injury latest: Habib Diarra, Nordi Mukiele and Dan Ballard return dates ahead of Dinamo Zagreb and Chelsea

Sunderland face fresh injury concerns ahead of Dinamo Zagreb and Chelsea, with Régis Le Bris providing updates on several first-team players

Sunderland's injury problems have worsened following their 3-1 defeat to Coventry City, with Régis Le Bris confirming a fresh setback for Habib Diarra and providing an update on Nordi Mukiele's recovery.

The Black Cats returned from the Coventry Building Society Arena without a point, leaving them bottom of the Premier League with five points from nine matches. Sunderland must now prepare for Thursday's Europa League clash with Dinamo Zagreb before welcoming Chelsea to the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Habib Diarra

Diarra suffered a fresh injury in training ahead of Saturday's defeat to Coventry, having only recently returned from a hamstring problem that kept him sidelined for several weeks.

The Senegal international featured in Sunderland's Europa League draw with Lech Poznań and the Carabao Cup victory over Brentford, although he was withdrawn at half-time in the latter fixture as the club carefully managed his workload.

Le Bris has now confirmed another setback, with the severity of the problem still unknown. "So Habib, it's a shame because he got a muscle injury during the training session. We don't know yet the severity of it," the Sunderland head coach explained.

The midfielder is consequently a major doubt for the upcoming matches against Dinamo Zagreb and Chelsea, although Sunderland have not established a definitive recovery timeframe. The November international break could provide an opportunity for rehabilitation, depending on the results of further assessments.

Injury: Muscle problem

Expected return: To be confirmed

Nordi Mukiele

Mukiele missed the defeat to Coventry after suffering a concussion during Sunderland's goalless draw with Leeds United. The French defender was forced off against Leeds following an accidental collision with teammate Luke O'Nien and has subsequently entered concussion protocols.

Le Bris confirmed that Mukiele would not be available for Thursday's Europa League encounter but expressed hope that he could return against Chelsea. "Nordi is in a concussion protocol at the minute, which he is why he wasn't available today," Le Bris said. "So he won't be available against Dinamo Zagreb this week, but should be available for Chelsea."

His potential return would provide a significant boost, particularly with Omar Alderete suspended for Chelsea's visit following his red card against Coventry. Mukiele's availability remains subject to completing the necessary concussion recovery protocols.

Injury: Concussion

Expected return: Chelsea, November 8

Dan Ballard

Ballard remains sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury while representing Northern Ireland during the September international period. The centre-back has missed a significant portion of Sunderland's autumn schedule, denying Le Bris one of his established defensive options during a difficult period. Speaking previously about Ballard's recovery, Le Bris explained: "It's a shame for Ballard because he was in a good place and will be sidelined for a few weeks. It's a medium-term injury and we'll keep you updated."

Sunderland have not announced a definitive return date, although the defender is not expected back until after the November international break at the earliest. His absence is particularly concerning given Alderete's suspension and the defensive errors that contributed to Saturday's defeat.

Injury: Hamstring

Expected return: After the November international break at the earliest; potentially December

Romaine Mundle

Mundle remains unavailable following surgery on a knee injury, with the winger facing an extended period on the sidelines. Le Bris previously expressed disappointment at losing Mundle and indicated that the club hoped to have him available towards the end of the calendar year.

Injury: Knee

Expected return: Around the festive period or early January
