Stephen Warnock singles out five Sunderland players in brutal Match of the Day verdict after Coventry City defeat
Stephen Warnock singled out several Sunderland players as he dissected the defensive mistakes that contributed to their defeat at Coventry City
Former England defender Stephen Warnock delivered a damning assessment of Sunderland's performance against Coventry City, highlighting three costly mistakes and questioning the defensive organisation of Régis Le Bris' side.
Sunderland suffered a 3-1 defeat at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday afternoon, with the hosts capitalising on individual errors and defensive uncertainty to establish a commanding lead.
Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Warnock analysed the goals Sunderland conceded and singled out several players, including Luke O'Nien, Omar Alderete, Chris Rigg, Reinildo and Nilson Angulo.
Warnock questions Sunderland's defending and highlights Reinildo and Angulo
"He spoke about it there, Régis Le Bris, it's unacceptable and you can't legislate for those mistakes. Granit Xhaka talking about making mistakes and not being good enough,” Warnock said. "You see a disjointed back line from Sunderland and then Reinildo and Angulo. They've got their eyes set on Sakamoto and Van Ewijk's got that space down the right-hand side.
“This was an outlet for Coventry all day; it was very easy. Angulo now can't get close enough, then there's a mistake, but the finish - take nothing away from the finish - but that's got to be inside of the left foot when you're clearing it. It can't be the outside of the foot."
Luke O'Nien mistake and Omar Alderete criticised
Warnock then focused on Sunderland's problems in possession and their inability to prevent Coventry from advancing into dangerous areas. "Frank mentioned that Sakamoto's finish, absolutely perfect, but then you've got this area of midfield; you've got to retain the ball, it's got to mean more to you,” he added.
"You look at the numbers here, they're actually in a good position if it is to break down where you think there's enough, but O'Nien, too slow on the ball, gets caught and then it's too easy for him. He keeps on driving and driving, and if you watch the position here of Alderete, he just keeps on dropping. You see him there circled, drops, drops, drops, no pressure on the ball, that can't happen."

Warnock's assessment suggested Sunderland had enough numbers behind the ball to prevent Coventry from creating an opportunity, but their defensive reaction compounded the original mistake. His criticism of Alderete was particularly pointed, with the defender accused of allowing the opposition to advance without being challenged.
Chris Rigg handed 'harsh lesson' as Jack Rudoni punishes Sunderland
The pundit also examined Coventry's third goal, with Jack Rudoni taking advantage of Sunderland's inability to track runners and close down space. Warnock identified Rigg's failure to recover after Rudoni moved beyond him, before returning to the broader issue of Sunderland's defensive line dropping too deep.
"Chris Rigg, a harsh lesson for him,” Warnock said. "Rudoni gets on the wrong side of him; you've got to bust a gut to get back in. If you're not, the defenders they keep on dropping; we talked about them before. At some point you've got to step the other way and engage because you can't allow a player of Jack Rudoni's quality, at the moment he's in that rich vein of form where he's scoring, to step off, allowing that space and they got punished for three bad moments, three mistakes."
