‘Time for a new manager’ – Sunderland fans deliver furious Régis Le Bris verdict after Coventry defeat

Sunderland fans questioned Régis Le Bris’ future after a damaging 3-1 defeat at Coventry City leaving them bottom of the league

Sunderland supporters questioned Régis Le Bris’ future after a damaging 3-1 defeat at Coventry City left the Black Cats bottom of the Premier League.

Le Bris and his players were booed by the travelling supporters after a result that leaves Sunderland with just five points from nine matches and 17 goals conceded. Goals from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni put Coventry in control before Enzo Le Fée pulled one back from the penalty spot. Omar Alderete’s late dismissal for a second yellow card compounded a miserable afternoon.

Some supporters called for a managerial change, while others questioned individual performances and whether replacing Le Bris would be enough to address Sunderland’s problems. Here is what supporters said on X, with spelling and grammar tidied and profanity removed.

Supporters question Le Bris’ future

@CharlieSutton33 wrote: “Time for big changes. Unfortunately, the buck stops with the manager. The drop-off has been alarming. There is something seriously wrong at the club. I never thought I would say it, but we need a change in direction and leadership. Time for a new manager.”

@PaulStokes_ said: “Thanks for the memories, Régis.” @shanehagan24 wrote: “Le Bris out.” @connnnnorrrr added: “He’s got to go.” @TheWhiteDeath58 questioned whether Sunderland’s approach would change: “It’s not even about the fact we lost, man. It’s about the fact we know next week we’ll play the exact same way.”

Concerns over performances and tactics

@tongey93 wrote: “We’ve been far too negative and far too passive. No fight, which we had last year in abundance. Everything is too slow, lethargic and predictable. Very worried, with a difficult run coming up.”

@johnbdurkan wanted changes to the formation and captaincy: “RLB needs a Farke-style intervention, as he’s too stubborn about ‘the process’. Xhaka needs a spell out of the side, Nordi in as captain. We should be playing 4-4-2 with Brobbey’s strength and the other forwards’ pace.”

@StevieB1973 said: “This team will go down. Something is not right, and there’s a massive drop-off from last season.” @Roker_Mond37 wrote: “Honestly, I can’t see where the next point comes from, let alone a win. By the international break, we will be well adrift if something doesn’t change.”

Squad also comes under scrutiny

@Scookie555 argued that a managerial change would not necessarily resolve Sunderland’s problems: “You can sack him, but whoever comes in can still only pick from a squad with a captain who wanted to leave in the summer, and it shows, a group of defenders who can’t defend, an attack with barely any goal threat and zero proper pace. Not much you can do with that.”

@hettonpete1 suggested financial considerations could influence the owners’ thinking, while speculating about the reasons for Sunderland’s decline: “Potential loss of revenue will force the owners’ hand, unfortunately. Clearly, something has gone on behind the scenes because the drop-off is mad. Not helped by a pretty poor window. Xhaka is a shadow of his former self.” @MichaelMcA91 also criticised the captain: “Wish we’d let Xhaka [leave] when he wanted to.”
