Stats experts predict Sunderland relegation battle after Coventry City defeat

The stats experts at Opta have updated their final predicted Premier League table - and it does not make for good reading for Sunderland.

Sunderland’s poor league form continued on Saturday when they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Premier League newcomers Coventry City.

The Black Cats made the trip to the CBS Arena looking to rack up only their second league win of the season - but found themselves up against it as their hosts took a two-goal lead into half-time after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Taiwo Awoniyi both found the net. That lead was extended just seven minutes after the restart and that was enough to hand the points to the Sky Blues despite an Enzo Le Fee penalty midway through the second-half giving Sunderland something to build.

Another desperately disappointing day was brought to a fitting end in stoppage time when Black Cats defender Omar Alderete was shown a second yellow card and Regis Le Bris’ side ended a game with ten men for the second successive Premier League fixture.

More worryingly, the result means Sunderland remained bottom of the table and although they are only two points from safety, concerns over a relegation battle are understandably rising with every passing week. With the likes of Chelsea, Aston Villa, Spurs and Liverpool all on the agenda over the next month, we take a look at the latest predicted final Premier League table produced by the stats experts at Opta - and it doesn’t make for good reading for Black Cats fans.
