One of Sunderland’s main rivals for promotion into the Premier League could be set for a major boost after reports suggested Sheffield United are closing in on a long-awaited takeover.
The Blades, who moved level on points with Sunderland at the top of the Championship with a 1-0 win against cross-city rivals Sheffield Wednesday, have taken a major step closer to falling into the hands of new owners over the weekend after Ohio-based businessman Steve Rosen held further talks with current owner Prince Abdullah.
Rosen’s consortium has reportedly been boosted by Guardant Health company founder and CEO Helmy Eltoukhy and could be further enhanced by Hollywood film director Joe Russo. The trio are believed to have taken in Sunday’s Steel City derby win and The Sheffield Star has claimed the would-be owners are ‘just awaiting final sign-off’ from the EFL before a takeover can be formally completed.
But how would the wealth of the Blades’ owners-in-waiting compare to Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and other owners cross the Championship?
