Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has broken his silence following his early substitution during the Black Cats' crucial Premier League victory over Chelsea
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has sent a message to supporters following the Black Cats' crucial 1-0 Premier League victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.
The Switzerland international was forced off during the opening stages of the contest, with youngster Jules Ahoka introduced in his place. Xhaka subsequently headed straight down the tunnel, prompting questions among supporters about the circumstances surrounding his early departure.

However, Sunderland produced a much-improved performance to secure three valuable points, with Enzo Le Fée's first-half penalty proving decisive. Following the final whistle, Xhaka returned to the pitch to celebrate with his teammates and was seen smiling and congratulating his fellow players after a desperately needed victory.
The midfielder has now taken to Instagram to share a positive message with supporters, posting a series of photographs alongside a short caption. "Great performance. This is where we belong. Haway lads,” Xhaka wrote following the game at the Stadium of Light.
The message comes amid pockets of online scrutiny surrounding Xhaka's performances and commitment following Sunderland's difficult start to the season. However, teammate Luke O'Nien also offered an interesting insight into the captain's contribution behind the scenes, revealing that Xhaka continued offering tactical advice despite his early substitution.
"Even Granit today, when he came off in the first couple of minutes, he's in the changing rooms, sitting next to me giving tactics," O'Nien explained. "If that's not captaincy that people can't see, they won't see behind the scenes, but that's what you want from your skipper."
