Labour group launch investigation into Ryhope councillor’s social media posts

Sunderland Labour Party bosses are investigating a city councillor’s social media posts after calls for his resignation.

Conservative and UKIP members have called for the resignation of Ryhope councillor Michael Essl following an admission he made false allegations about a member of the public.

Cllr Essl posted an apology on Facebook group admitting making false accusations in the past, prompting calls for him resign.

Sunderland’s Labour party say it has launched an investigation into Cllr Essl’s behaviour.

Sunderland Labour Group leader Coun Graeme Miller, said: “This is a matter for the whip’s office. They are currently investigating. We will not be making any further comment.”

When contacted by the Sunderland Echo Cllr Essl declined to comment.

Cllr Essl has been a Sunderland City Council member since 2010 and won a seat at three elections, most recently in 2018.

From 2010 to 2018 he represented the Barnes ward and has been a member for the Ryhope ward since 2018.

He is currently a member of five sub-committees and was appointed chair of the Planning and Highways (East) Committee in June 2020.
