Sunderland carer who looks after mam in shock after half-a-million pound windfall from Stephen Mulhern
“It’s amazing and I just can’t believe the things I can now do for my mam”
A Sunderland man who cares for his elderly mother who has dementia has won half-a-million pounds thanks to a call from celebrity magician and television presenter Stephen Mulhern.
Jason, said the money will be “life-changing” for him and his mother.
The Sunderland carer won the £500,000 after a ‘cash call’ from Stephen as part of his show on Heart Radio Breakfast.
On the call to Jason, Stephen said: “Hello it’s Stephen Mulhern here. I’m not going to lie, this is possibly going to be the biggest phone call of your life because Jason, you’ve just won half a million pounds - it’s yours.”
A shocked Jason, 56, responded: “Oh my god, I don’t believe it, that’s absolutely fantastic.”
After his mother Sylvia was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia, Jason had to give up work to look after her.
He said: “I gave up work to take care of my mam full time. Basically, I just don’t get out as much now taking care of my mam and most of the things I do now I have got to do with my mam to help to keep her healthy.
“It’s going to mean a hell of a lot, because now I will be able to actually take my mam away somewhere. It’s life changing for my mam and me because this will help me get her out and about.
“I can pay for carers who can come out with us. I couldn’t take my mam out by myself as she has got Alzheimer's and dementia - I cannot believe it.
“I can get that little bit of a break myself and also get to take my mam out. I’m just in shock. It’s amazing and I just can’t believe the things I can now do for my mam.
“My mam has looked after me all my life, so when she fell ill it is only right to take care of her.”
Speaking following the call, Stephen added: “It is an honour to do Cash Call and I’m over the moon for you. When I’m lucky enough to do it, I get emotional. It is a moment; even talking about it now, I’ve got goosebumps.”
Cash Call on the Heart Breakfast show gives listeners the chance to win huge life-changing prizes every week.
