Councillor Phil Tye has lead tributes to a 24-year-old man who died at a property in Park Avenue in the Silksworth area of Sunderland on Friday, June 18.

Cllr Tye’s message said: “Our thoughts are with you and your family from Councillor Phil Tye on behalf of the Silksworth community.”

Paramedics and police officers were called to the address at around 1am where they found the man with ‘serious, life-threatening’ injuries.

Despite efforts to save his life, he sadly died at the scene and officers have since launched a murder investigation.

Following the incident, a 25-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder – with detectives confirming the man arrested and the victim are known to each other and want to reassure residents this was not a random attack between strangers.

Just one police car remains at the scene on Saturday, June 19, and neighbours described what they saw during the early hours of Friday.

One neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I was woke up at about 1am to the paramedics and the police.

"It’s just a shock, they’ve lived there for a long time I always used to see him out walking the dog.

“I can’t believe it, it’s such a shock. I didn’t really know him that well but he seemed like a really nice lad."
