Wolves target Sunderland promotion winner in bargain transfer move after relegation – reports
Former Sunderland captain Dan Neil attracting Championship interest ahead of confirmed free transfer exit
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly targeting former Sunderland captain Dan Neil ahead of a summer rebuild following their relegation to the Championship.
According to Football League World, the Midlands club are considering a move for the 24-year-old midfielder, who is set to leave Sunderland on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Neil, an academy graduate at the Stadium of Light, made 201 appearances for the Black Cats and played a key role in their rise from League One, establishing himself as a central figure during their two promotion-winning campaigns from the third tier to the Premier League.

However, his involvement was limited this season following Sunderland’s return to the Premier League. He made just three top-flight appearances under Régis Le Bris before joining Ipswich Town on loan in January. Since making the switch, Neil has featured regularly for Ipswich, contributing to their push for promotion back to the Premier League, with 13 appearances so far.
Sunderland have already confirmed that Neil will depart the club this summer, bringing an end to a long association that began in the academy. Wolves, who are preparing for life back in the Championship, are expected to undergo significant changes to their squad, particularly in midfield, and view Neil as a cost-effective option with proven experience at that level. It remains to be seen whether Ipswich will pursue a permanent deal, but interest is building ahead of what looks set to be a key summer for the Sunderland academy product.
