Gus Poyet’s men delivered a penalty shoot-out victory at Old Trafford to seal their first trip to the new Wembley, with a raft of fans favourites packed in the squad.
But where are they now? Scroll down and click through the pages to see where the Black Cats’ squad from that memorable evening are now:
9. RW: Fabio Borini
A crowd favourite during his two stints at Sunderland, Borini joined AC Milan on a permanent deal in 2018 but quickly fell out of favour. He recently made the move to Hellas Verona, when he signed a deal until the end of the season. Photo: Clive Mason
10. LW: Adam Johnson
Johnson was sacked by the club after he was convicted of sexually touching a child after a trial at Bradford Crown Court in early 2016. He had admitted kissing and grooming a schoolgirl and was handed a six-year jail term by a judge. He was released from prison in March 2019. Photo: Clive Mason
11. ST: Steven Fletcher
There were highs and lows during Fletcher’s spell at the Stadium of Light, and - after a spell in France with Marseille - he joined Sheffield Wednesday, where he remains today. He’s become a key player for the Owls, but is currently sidelined with injury. Photo: PAUL ELLIS
12. SUB: Jozy Altidore
An underwhelming recruit, Altidore failed to hit the heights Sunderland had hoped when he arrived on Wearside. He joined Toronto FC in a part-exchange deal which saw Jermain Defoe head to the Stadium of Light, and remains in the MLS to this day. Photo: Clive Mason
