Gus Poyet’s men delivered a penalty shoot-out victory at Old Trafford to seal their first trip to the new Wembley, with a raft of fans favourites packed in the squad.
But where are they now? Scroll down and click through the pages to see where the Black Cats’ squad from that memorable evening are now:
5. LB: Marcos Alonso
Alonso may have only made 20 appearances for Sunderand, but he made a lasting impression on the club’s support. He’s now back in England after a spell in Italy with Fiorentina, and is a regular for Chelsea. Photo: Clive Mason
6. CM: Lee Cattermole
At his prime in the Premier League, Cattermole proved a fine force for the Black Cats. He enjoyed a renaissance in League One last season, before departing the Stadium of Light after a decade of service - heading to Holland and VVV Venlo. He’s quickly become a crowd favourite there too. Photo: Clive Mason
7. CM: Ki Sung-yeung
Ki was a popular player during his season-long loan move to the Stadium of Light, but now plies his trade on the other side of the River Tyne with Newcastle United. He has, however, been told he can leave St James’s Park this month by manager Steve Bruce. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
8. CM: Jack Colback
Another member of this side currently at Newcastle, Colback is also facing an uncertain future having been told he is surplus to requirements. The midfielder is currently recovering from a serious injury. Photo: Matthew Peters
