Gus Poyet’s men delivered a penalty shoot-out victory at Old Trafford to seal their first trip to the new Wembley, with a raft of fans favourites packed in the squad.
But where are they now? Scroll down and click through the pages to see where the Black Cats’ squad from that memorable evening are now:
13. SUB: Craig Gardner
Central midfielder Gardner forged a strong career in the game after leaving Sunderland, heading to West Brom and then Birmingham City. He is set to retire in the summer to take up a coaching position at St Andrew’s. Photo: Clive Mason
14. UNUSED: Seb Larsson
Another popular face with the Sunderland supporters, Larsson racked-up over 200 appearances for the club before departing for Hull City in 2017. He’s now back in his native Sweden playing for AIK. Photo: Mark Runnacles
15. UNUSED: Ondrej Celustka
In a largely forgettable loan spell on Wearside, Celustka made just 27 appearances before heading back to parent club Trabzonspor. After a spell with FC Nurnberg in Germany, he’s back in Turkey now with Antalyaspor. Photo: Scott Heavey
16. UNUSED: Santiago Vergini
THAT own goal away at Southampton will always dwarf Vergini’s achievements at the Stadium of Light - and he’s enjoyed a nomadic career since leaving Wearside. He headed to Boca Juniors in his native Argentina before joining Turkish side Bursaspor, and is now back with San Lorenzo in his homeland. Photo: GLYN KIRK
