The Black Cats picked up another win in League One yesterday, defeating Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers 1-0 at the Memorial Stadium.

That result leaves Lee Johnson’s side in third place in the third tier and very much in contention for the automatic promotion spots.

Indeed, Sunderland have lost just once in their last 18 fixtures in all competitions and are unbeaten in 12.

And the Wearside club’s fate is seemingly in their own hands.

Sunderland are two points behind second-placed Peterborough United with a game in hand over Posh and a fixture to play against Darren Ferguson’s side.

The Black Cats also just three points behind league-leaders Hull City with two games in hand over Grant McCann’s club and a match to play against the Tigers.

Anichebe, commenting on Instagram, had this four-word plea to his old club ahead of the run-in.

He said: “Keep it going guys!”
