Tom Burwell explains why leading players are choosing Sunderland after six-deal transfer window
Sunderland chief executive Tom Burwell has outlined why the Stadium of Light and the city’s appeal are helping the club attract leading players
Sunderland chief executive Tom Burwell believes the Stadium of Light and the opportunity to represent the city have made the club an increasingly attractive destination for leading players.
The Black Cats completed six deals during a busy transfer window as they strengthened Régis Le Bris’ squad for a season involving Premier League and European football. Burwell admitted Sunderland’s director of football Florent Ghisolfi had been among the busiest figures in the division on deadline day, with the drama surrounding Malick Fofana, but is pleased that attention can now return to matters on the pitch.
Sunderland faced competition for several of their targets during the window but were still able to persuade high-profile players to move to Wearside, with the well-documented transfer tussle with Crystal Palace taking centre stage. Burwell believes the club’s support, home stadium and close relationship with the city all play a major role during recruitment talks.

“I think our director of football was certainly one of the busiest men on transfer deadline day,” Burwell told Sky Sports’ Premier League Show. “We’re happy that we can now concentrate on looking forward to the rest of the season. I think the Stadium of Light is an arena that players want to play in,” he said. “Sunderland is a city they want to represent. We’re very proud of the group that is doing so and will do so this season. We’re excited.”
Burwell was appointed Sunderland’s chief executive in April 2026, having previously worked as the club’s chief operating officer. He oversees Sunderland’s business operations and is tasked with supporting their continued growth on and off the pitch, while working closely with the ownership, football department and wider senior leadership team.
