Sunderland continued their Premier League campaign against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Régis Le Bris’ side headed to West London looking to build on their first victory of the season against Fulham, with deadline-day signing Kevin Danso handed his debut.
Here is how James Copley rated the Sunderland players following the final whistle.

1. Robin Roefs
Did not face a single shot on target during the opening 45 minutes but commanded his area well and used the ball neatly with his feet. Tested early after the break and showed sharp reflexes to keep Brentford out. Could do little about the opener. A solid performance. 7 | Getty Images

2. Thomas Meunier
Started on the right of Sunderland’s attack, offering defensive security and an additional aerial outlet. Gave Le Bris’ side balance and did little wrong before being replaced by Trai Hume after 64 minutes. 6 | Getty Images

3. Reinildo Mandava
Typically steady on the left during the first half. Rock solid behind Nilson Angulo, giving the winger the platform to express himself. Brentford made a point of attacking down his side after the break and enjoyed more success. 6 | Chris Fryatt, Sunderland Echo

4. Dan Ballard
Thought he had put Sunderland ahead with a superb left-footed finish, only for VAR to rule it out. Looked much more like his usual self following difficult displays against Ipswich Town and Fulham. Produced some superb blocks towards the end. 8 | Chris Fryatt, Sunderland Echo
