The fate of the current campaign remains unclear, with all fixtures suspended indefinitely and clubs warned not to return to training until May 16 at the earliest.

And while the EFL remain committed to finishing the season – with plans to fulfil all the remaining fixtures in eight weeks having been laid out to clubs – there are a number of clubs calling for the season to be cancelled and declared null and void.

According to Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony, the Black Cats’ board of directors have backed his plans to complete the season.

MacAnthony has been vocal over his desire to finish the season, and has previously threatened a ‘serious lawsuit’ against the EFL should fixtures failed to be concluded.

And he has now revealed that he has backing from Sunderland as he lobbies the EFL to ensure all games are played.

He tweeted: “Had a lovely email from @SunderlandAFC directors this morning stating their appreciation/full support of my message on finishing our season when its possible.

Sunderland have not commented publicly on their stance, but Stewart Donald said in an open letter to supporters that the club ‘look forward to games resuming when it is safe and appropriate to do so’.
