Community Champion awards return to celebrate those who make a difference in Sunderland
The awards celebrate those who make a difference in their communities.
"The Open Arms Awards celebrate the people and organisations who make an extraordinary difference in our communities every day,” says the organiser of the city’s annual community champion awards.

Voluntary and Community Action Sunderland (VCAS) has announced the return of its 7th annual Open Arms Awards - with this year's event set to be the biggest yet.
Now in their seventh year, the awards celebrate the individuals, volunteers, trustees and organisations whose dedication and community spirit help make Sunderland a stronger, fairer and more connected city.
The awards will take place on 9 December at Sunderland Minster and will feature five new Community Champion Awards, sponsored by Sunderland City Council, recognising outstanding individuals from communities across the city.
The Open Arms Awards are unique because nominations and voting are led by Sunderland's voluntary, community and social enterprise sector, ensuring recognition comes directly from local organisations, volunteers and residents.
This year's event is supported by 14 organisations from across the public, private and voluntary sectors, including Ben & Jerry ,Gentoo, Groundwork North East, Sunderland BID, Sunderland Culture, Northern Powergrid, and Sunderland City Council.
The awards recognise achievements across a broad range of areas including volunteering, community development, health and wellbeing, partnership working, culture, sport and environmental action.
Janette Hilton, Chief Officer of VCAS, said:"The Open Arms Awards celebrate the people and organisations who make an extraordinary difference in our communities every day. Many work quietly behind the scenes, supporting others without seeking recognition, and these awards provide an opportunity for the sector to come together and celebrate their achievements."
She added:"The voluntary and community sector plays a vital role in supporting residents, reducing inequalities and strengthening communities across Sunderland. The awards highlight the incredible impact of our volunteers, trustees, community leaders and organisations and recognise the difference they make to people's lives."
