Since returning to the Championship they’ve overcome some major injury issues to reach the World Cup in a decent position, one which they’ll hope to improve in the weeks ahead.
So who has impressed so far and who has work to do? Here, we’ve collated our player ratings from the season so far and calculated each player’s average to find out.
To ensure a fair overview we’ve only included players with at least four appearances.
Tony Mowbray will hope that Dan Ballard has a big part to play after the break following his impressive but limited early showings, while Niall Huggins also underlined his potential in the win over Birmingham City in what was his first game for over a year.
He believes that will leave his side with the depth he needs to make a real impact at the level…

9. ELLIOT EMBLETON - 6
A tally of four combined goals and assists represents a solid enough start to the season, and his versatility across the pitch has been valuable for both of his managers. Has a platform to build on, there’s no doubting he has the ability for the level. Photo: FRANK REID 2022

10. PATRICK ROBERTS - 6.2
Left out of the side at the start of the campaign due a switch to 3-5-2, and introduced to impressive effect by Tony Mowbray. A brilliant brace at Reading was one of the moments of the season so far. Now faces added competition from the rapidly-improving Amad, but given the way Mowbray wants to play, he is going to be key on a weekly basis. Mowbray doesn't think there are many, if any, better at what he does at the level. Photo: Frank Reid

11. LYNDEN GOOCH - 6.5
Kicked on again from an excellent finish to last season, thriving in a wing-back role that seemed perfectly suited to his strengths. If the move to a back four continues he’ll face greater competition in the second half of the campaign, especially after a recent injury. Photo: Frank Reid

12. ABDOULLAH BA - 5.8
A seriously talented player who has shown flashes of brilliance. Remains inexperienced and is adjusting to life at a new club, and so is being slowly introduced by Mowbray and that’s a process that will likely continue. Very exciting, though. Photo: Frank Reid
