And there are plenty of ex-Sunderland players that could be involved for Wigan Athletic. Here, we take a look at how they’re getting on at the DW Stadium under boss Leam Richardson:

James McClean

A controversial figure during his time at Sunderland, McClean joined Wigan Athletic when the club were in League One last season and helped Richardson’s men to promotion with nine goals in 33 appearances.

The 33-year-old has continued to be a regular this campaign, playing 12 times in the Championship and averaging 87 minutes per match.

McClean has so far netted once in the league this season and started Wigan’s last game against Cardiff City.

Ashley Fletcher

Since making the move to Wigan Athletic last summer, former Sunderland and Middlesbrough striker Ashley Fletcher has failed to make much of an impact.

Fletcher has made just two appearances off the bench for Richardson so far playing two minutes of football against Hull City and five against Luton Town without producing any goals.

However, in the game against Hull City, Fletcher did nearly score as he rose highest to meet Power’s free-kick, but the forward’s header was off-target. Fletcher was an unused substitute as Wigan lost to Cardiff last time out.

Charlie Wyke’s career at Sunderland burst into life during the 2020-21 season with the striker netting 31 goals.

A move to Wigan Athletic followed during the following summer but Wyke was to suffer a cardiac arrest which kept him out of the game for a long period.

Thankfully, Wyke was saved by boss Leam Richardson and the Wigan Athletic doctors and is now back playing.

The 29-year-old striker has featured seven times this season as he is eased back in but started and scored during Wigan’s last game against Cardiff City.

Max Power

Sunderland’s former captain has performed well since making his Wigan Athletic return and helped the club win League One last campaign.

This season, Power has once again been a stalwart for the Latics and plays the majority of minutes for Richardson in the heart of his midfield alongside Graeme Shinnie.

Nathan Broadhead

Nathan Broadhead to Sunderland during the summer on a permanent deal was extremely close to coming off before Wigan Athletic swooped to take the Everton man on loan.

Since making the move to the DW Stadium, Broadhead has played 10 times for the Latics in all competitions. However, the Welshman has featured largely from the bench, only playing an average of 31 minutes per appearance.

Broadhead has scored just one goal for Wigan Athletic this season and started from the bench as his new club lost 3-1 to Cardiff City in the Championship last time out.

Jordan Jones

Jordan Jones’ Wigan Athletic career hasn’t gone to plan and technically, he isn’t actually at the club currently and has spent most of his career as a Latics player out on loan.

The 27-year-old ex-Rangers and Sunderland man made just eight Wigan appearances before heading out on loan to St Mirren for the second half of the 2021-22 campaign.

Jones is now on loan at Kilmarnock and will not be available as Wigan visit Sunderland on Saturday.
