Sunderland’s Europa League millions explained as huge UEFA bonuses offer further windfall
Sunderland’s European return is bringing in millions, with further UEFA bonuses available for every stage of their Europa League campaign
Sunderland’s 1-1 draw at Lech Poznań added approximately £126,000 to their expected Europa League earnings, taking their participation payment and match bonuses to around £4.50million.
Timur Tutierov’s early opener was cancelled out in Poland, leaving the Black Cats unbeaten with seven points from their opening three European fixtures. According to UEFA’s official 2026/27 distribution plan, each league-phase victory is worth approximately £378,000, while a draw brings £126,000.

Sunderland’s wins over AZ Alkmaar and Torreense had already added roughly £756,000 to their participation payment of approximately £3.62million. The point against Poznań increased their expected results bonuses to £882,000. Further money depends on their final league-phase position. Ranking payments initially range from approximately £63,000 for finishing 36th to £2.27million for first place, with each position worth another £63,000.
Those payments increase when unused money from drawn matches is redistributed. Finishing in the top eight earns an additional £504,000, while clubs placed ninth to 16th receive another £252,000. Reaching the knockout play-offs brings £252,000. Qualification for the last 16 earns £1.47million, followed by further bonuses of £2.1million for the quarter-finals, £3.53million for the semi-finals and £5.88million for reaching the final.
Winning the trophy adds another £5.04million. These totals exclude Sunderland’s separate broadcast-related UEFA allocation and ticketing and hospitality income. European fixtures also bring costs, so revenue should not be confused with profit. All sterling figures use approximately 84p per euro. UEFA’s distribution plan remains subject to final confirmation, rather than representing money already received by the club.
