Ex-Sunderland, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest man confirms retirement after nearly 500 games
Ex-Sunderland academy graduate Jack Colback has confirmed his retirement after nearly 500 senior appearances
Former Sunderland and Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback has announced his retirement from professional football after a career spanning more than a decade and close to 500 senior appearances.
Colback confirmed the news in a statement reflecting on a career that saw him represent several clubs across English football, including Sunderland, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town and Queens Park Rangers.
"I feel privileged to have the honour of playing nearly 500 matches at the top level, representing some of the biggest clubs in the country in Newcastle, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and Queen’s Park Rangers," he said. From pulling on the shirt for the first time as a young lad to stepping out in front of packed stadiums in the Premier League, it’s been a journey I’ll always be grateful for.
"There have been highs, lows, promotions, tough defeats, and moments I’ll never forget. I would like to thank all of my coaches, teammates and supporters who helped me to achieve my dream. Looking forward to what the next chapter holds."
Colback’s professional journey began on Wearside after he progressed through Sunderland’s academy system. Born in Newcastle, he joined the club as a 10-year-old before signing his first professional contract at the Stadium of Light in 2008.
A loan spell at Ipswich Town during the 2009-10 campaign proved an important early step in his development. The midfielder impressed at Portman Road, scoring against Blackpool and winning the club’s Players’ Player of the Season award. His performances earned him a return to Wearside, and he made his Premier League debut for Sunderland AFC in April 2010 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Over the following seasons, Colback established himself as a dependable and versatile option under managers including Steve Bruce, Martin O'Neill and Gus Poyet. Primarily a central midfielder, he was also frequently deployed at full-back when required. He scored his first Sunderland goal in a 1-1 draw with Everton in December 2011 and later found the net again in an FA Cup replay victory over Middlesbrough.
By the 2013-14 season, Colback had become one of Sunderland’s most consistent performers. He played a key role in the club’s dramatic fight for Premier League survival that year, scoring a late equaliser against Cardiff City and netting the decisive goal in a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
He was also part of the Sunderland side that reached the 2014 League Cup final under Gus Poyet, as well as featuring in one of the club’s most memorable Tyne-Wear derbies - the 3-0 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park in April 2013. In total, Colback made 135 appearances for Sunderland before leaving the Stadium of Light in the summer of 2014.
His next move proved controversial. After his contract expired, the midfielder opted to join Newcastle United on a free transfer - a decision that significantly damaged his reputation among many Sunderland supporters. The move was a rare direct switch between the fierce North East rivals, making Colback the first player in 16 years to cross the divide.

Despite the backlash, Colback went on to make more than 100 appearances for Newcastle and even earned an England call-up during his first season at St James’ Park. He was also part of the squad under Rafael Benítez that won the Championship title in 2017. Colback later went on to play for Nottingham Forest, Queens Park Rangers and Ipswich Town before bringing the curtain down on a career that took him across multiple levels of English football.
