Sunderland’s talisman is set to make his return to the Academy of Light this week

Granit Xhaka has issued an emotional message to Sunderland supporters as he returns to training this week ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Xhaka has enjoyed a three-week break following Switzerland's historic World Cup campaign, and will join Thomas Meunier, Omar Alderete and Chemsdine Talbi in resuming training on Wearside. The midfielder's future at the club had been in serious doubt earlier this summer when Chelsea made a major move to sign him, but after initially considering the switch he drew a line under the speculation and committed to continuing his journey on Wearside.

As he prepares to lead the Black Cats into their first European campaign for over 50 years, he urged players, staff and fans alike to stick together and embrace the challenge ahead.

"We created memories that will stay with us forever," Xhaka wrote on Instagram.

"The noise, the passion, the nights under the lights, hearing you sing with one voice... those are the moments that remind you why you love this game. Thank you for believing. Thank you for standing with us every single step of the way. Now a new season begins. New dreams. New challenges. The same badge. The same passion. Let's cherish every moment, fight for each other, and make this season even more forgettable than the last. Together. Always."

Régis Le Bris on Granit Xhaka’s imminent Sunderland return

Head coach Régis Le Bris has not spoken to Xhaka since the World Cup to allow him a proper period of rest and recovery, but is looking forward to his return and says it will help lift the club's pre-season preparations to the next level.

"It's more or less a rule [not to contact players on their holidays]," Le Bris said.

"We want to give them an opportunity to rest and enjoy time with their family but they're still in touch with the club. It's really clear, we're looking forward to seeing him this week because he sets the standards. I think the standards here are really good, but Granit is so important as a player and also as a leader. The way he can influence the whole behaviour of the squad, it's going to be really positive when he joins the team this week."
