Kevin Danso delivers heartfelt 'promise' to Sunderland fans amid on-field struggles

Kevin Danso has been discussing Sunderland’s early season fortunes...

Sunderland defender Kevin Danso has vowed to keep “pushing from the front” as the club seek a remedy for their recent run of underwhelming form.

At the time of writing, the Black Cats currently lie bottom of the Premier League table having amassed just five points from nine matches, with their only win of the top flight campaign coming against Fulham in late August. On Sunday, the play host to Chelsea, before embarking on a difficult run of fixtures that encompasses clashes with the likes of Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool.

And speaking to The i Paper, Danso has made it clear that he is fully aware of how imperative it is for Sunderland to raise their standards over the coming weeks. He said: “Accountability is really important to me, so I’m not shying away from anything.

“I think it speaks volumes when someone takes accountability and then works hard to make it better. In this situation, when you’re going through a tough period, it’s very easy to hide behind other things that are going on and make excuses, but it’s never been me. I want to push from the front, I want to lead, and I want to find solutions.”

The Austrian international made a promising start to life in red and white, but has struggled for form somewhat of late - with his early red card in last month’s 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth representing a particular nadir in his time on Wearside.

But Danso has promised that he still has plenty more to offer his new club. He continued: “Sunderland fans haven’t seen the best of me in any way yet. They’ve probably seen a few glimpses of it over a few games, but it’s not quite there yet. It will come, though. It definitely will, I promise that.

“I’m experienced enough, so it should happen a bit quicker. There are some things out of my control and some things in my control, but I’m just focusing on the things I can control, giving the best version of myself and definitely delivering better performances than I did at Bournemouth.”

Amid Sunderland’s ongoing difficulties on the pitch, speculation has also simmered over head coach Regis Le Bris’ future at the Stadium of Light. Sources within the club have stated that the Frenchman is safe in his role, however, with the belief being that he is capable of turning the Black Cats’ form around, and according to Danso, that view is also shared by the dressing room.

The centre-back added: “We’ve got good characters, but we need to look inwards. We’re 100 per cent behind Regis. We respect him, we like him as a coach and now it’s down to us to repay him.”

And in Danso’s opinion, Sunderland are not far off finding a solution to their problems. Highlighting the importance of fine margins, the 28-year-old concluded: “It’s about getting over that hump, all of us finding the extra five per cent to improve results. We can flick that switch.”
