Exclusive:'Being completely honest...' - Sunderland icon Kevin Phillips weighs in on Lutsharel Geertruida transfer saga

Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida has found himself at the centre of widespread speculation in recent days.

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has suggested that a summer exit for Black Cats loanee Lutsharel Geertruida could prove to be the “right decision for both sets of parties” amid ongoing speculation over his future.

Despite impressing on Wearside, the Dutchman has struggled to hold down a consistent starting spot since his arrival on an initial temporary agreement from German outfit RB Leipzig, and in recent weeks, several reports have emerged stating that Sunderland will not opt to trigger the permanent clause in his deal at the Stadium of Light.

And while nothing has been confirmed, there has been much debate amongst supporters as to whether the Black Cats would be making the correct decision by allowing Geertruida to leave the club in the coming weeks.

What has Kevin Phillips said about Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida?

Weighing in on the matter during an exclusive interview with The Echo, courtesy of BestBettingSites, Phillips said: “If I was being completely honest, I probably think it might be in both people's best interests. He was close to leaving the club in January.

“I think the club might be able to use that money to go out and get maybe a couple of players that are playing elsewhere around the world, and bring a couple in that can do a similar job. I'm not saying it's going to be a mistake, but I think it's probably the right decision for both sets of parties. Listen, he's done brilliant for Sunderland, but maybe there's just something in the background that maybe he wants to personally move on and try something new.”
