The decision means there will be a £2.5m per-year wage restriction in the third tier and comes as a blow for the Black Cats – whose wage bill at the start of last season stood at £10m.

There will be transitional arrangements in place to allow clubs to bring their wage cost down, yet the new regulations will still result in restrictions for Sunderland in the transfer market.

Here’s how some fans reacted on social media:

@chodgson2002: So now the likes of Sunderland Pompey and Hull who make considerable amounts through revenue and their fan base have to spend the same amount as Crewe Alexandra and Burton Albion. Ridiculous.

@Steve936: SAFC with an average attendance of 30,000 last season and a League One record attendance of 46,000 on Boxing Day are now limited to the same spends of a club like Accrington who avg 2700?? Makes a mockery of revenue equalisation. Fans have been dealt a right smack in the face IMO

@DavidHindmarsh7: This whole salary cap makes the sales of Mumba, Greenwood, Stephenson etc all the more stupid #SAFC

@slipperyPete75: We'll never move the likes of Grigg on now then, not going to move to a league higher and no chance of getting anywhere near current salary

@Philip_RJ89: Yes, the salary cap is a joke, but we’ll just have to adapt to it. It’ll doubtless be free transfers and loan deals for us now, and the pressure on Parkinson and the players to get out of this league is now even more intense.

@Sam96Prior: A salary cap is one of the most ludicrous ideas. Why should any individual or company living within their means be restricted to what they can spend. This decision is shocking on a number of levels.

@PhDHands: Long been an advocate of salary caps. But doing it at lower league and not at the top of the game and across all UEFA/FIFA is just going to widen the gaps.
