Former SAFC midfielder handed key role at Salford City
Former Sunderland midfielder Darron Gibson will assist new Salford boss Gary Bowyer.
Bowyer becomes Salford’s third manager of the season after the Sky Bet League Two club parted company with Richie Wellens on Monday.
Bowyer’s last managerial job was with Bradford, who sacked him in February 2020. The 49-year-old, who previously managed Blackburn and Blackpool, joined Derby in September as coach of their under-23 side.
Salford – who are owned by members of Manchester United’s ‘Class of 92’ including Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and David Beckham – currently sit in ninth place, six points outside the play-off positions.

Sunderland linked with in-demand striker
The Black Cats are one of several clubs who have been credited with an interest in St Johnstone striker Guy Melamed.
An Israeli striker, Melamed has been catching the eye for the Scottish side this term and has netted five goals in 15 games since making his debut in November.
And Football Insider claim that Sunderland are one of three clubs eyeing a potential summer move – with Portsmouth and Ipswich Town also rumoured to be interested.
Melamed is out of contract in the summer and the trio may be able to offer a lucrative contract if they are to secure promotion to the Championship.
The 28-year-old has never played in England, and his move to St Johnstone was the first time he had played outside of Israel.

A late winner for the under-23s
Will Harris’ late double saw Sunderland under-23s snatch a dramatic victory at Crystal Palace on Monday.
The striker scored twice in the final minutes of the game to hand the Black Cats victory after Jake O’Brien’s opener.
Sunderland were without a number of key players with the likes of Oliver Younger, Josh Hawkes and Benji Kimpioka all absent ahead of a behind closed doors friendly with the first-team on Tuesday.
Elliott Dickman was, however, able to call upon the services of two trialists as Nathan Newall and Danny Greenfield both featured for the second successive game.

Dion Sanderson latest
Let’s start with the Wolves loanee.
Sanderson has caught the eye in recent weeks while on loan at Sunderland and has built-up a strong partnership with Luke O’Nien at the heart of the Black Cats’ defence.
And given his performances of late, it is no surprise that he has already been linked with a host of top-flight clubs.
National reports have suggested that the likes of Sheffield United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace could all be interested in striking a deal for Sanderson come the summer – while Sunderland have also been credited with an interest in making the 21-year-old’s stay permanent.
But Sanderson himself says his preference would be to remain at Wolves, and to try and establish himself in the top flight.
Sunderland don’t have a midweek fixture this week - with Lee Johnson’s side now preparing for Saturday’s trip to Bristol Rovers.
The Black Cats remain third in the table with 11 league games to go, while there has been lots of talk about loan players Jordan Jones and Dion Sanderson.
