Sunderland fell to a 2-1 defeat against Bristol City after playing over 80 minutes with ten men.
Trai Hume was shown a hugely controversial early red card for a professional foul, but Eliezer Mayenda scored a sensational individual goal later in the half. Goals from Rob Dickie and Ross McCrorie turned the game around in the second half. Here’s how we rated the Black Cats....

5. Leo Hjelde
Defended well for the most part in what was a big team effort, just needs to be a bit more confident in possession. 6 | Leo Hjelde - player rating photo by James Copley

6. Dan Neil
Had an excellent game in the circumstances. Had to drop into centre half after the early red card and produced a really good defensive display, as well as using the ball very well under pressure. A sign of his growing maturity. 8 | Dan Neil - player rating photo by James Copley

7. Chris Rigg
His best game for a little while. Got about the pitch well, defended resolutely and looked bright in possession. Part of a strong team effort before he was brought off on the hour mark. 7 | Chris Rigg - player rating photo by James Copley Photo: Chris Rigg - player rating photo by James Copley

8. Patrick Roberts
Drew an excellent save from O’Leary with a good effort just before the break that would have doubled Sunderland’s advantage. Worked very hard and kept the ball well with Sunderland down to ten. Brought off after an hour and seemed to be in a bit of pain, but didn’t look too serious. 7 | Patrick Roberts - player rating photo by James Copley
