It has been an excellent start to the campaign for Sunderland and Regis Le Bris, with the Black Cats currently sitting top of the Championship in the second international break.
With nine games played, it’s the first chance to pause and reflect on the campaign so far. Sunderland have impressed fans and neutrals alike, but there’s still more to come from many in the squad. Here, Phil Smith gives his ratings so far... Only players currently in the senior squad who have made a competitive appearance so far this season are included.
17. Adil Aouchiche
Aouchiche earned the firm respect of the Sunderland fanbase for sticking at it behind the scenes even as it became clear he wasn't really part of Le Bris's plans. Made an important contribution when injuries stretched the squad over the festive period, helping to get some valuable points on the board. That he left on loan for Portsmouth shortly after suggested he remains likely to depart this summer. 5 | Ian Horrocks

18. Patrick Roberts
Le Bris praised Roberts in his pre-match press conference on Thursday for his availability and consistency this season. A big improvement from his struggles in the second half of last season. Continues to be involved somewhere in a large amount of Sunderland's goals even if he would undoubtedly like to score more himself. 7.5 | Getty Images

19. Romaine Mundle
Many feared Jack Clarke's departure would be ruinous for Sunderland's promotion hopes but Mundle proved to be a first-rate successor, scoring goals and contributing to the team's all-round game. Has suffered injury frustration of late and just needs now to rebuild his match sharpness. 8 | Frank Reid

20. Ian Poveda
Is having a very frustrating first season on Wearside. Has been beset by injury and fitness issues which mean he still hasn't made his first league start. Could be facing another month on the sidelines with a fresh injury. 2 | Harry Murphy/Getty Images Photo: Harry Murphy/Getty Images
