It has been an excellent start to the campaign for Sunderland and Regis Le Bris, with the Black Cats currently sitting top of the Championship in the second international break.
With nine games played, it’s the first chance to pause and reflect on the campaign so far. Sunderland have impressed fans and neutrals alike, but there’s still more to come from many in the squad. Here, Phil Smith gives his ratings so far... Only players currently in the senior squad who have made a competitive appearance so far this season are included.

9. Aji Alese
When fit Alese has done well, whether it be at centre back in the opening weeks of the season or at left back more recently. So unfortunate that injury has again struck, with a serious leg injury bringing his campaign to an early end. A player who just needs some luck. 5.5 | PA

10. Dan Neil
By his own admission, Neil didn't quite hit the heights he hoped for in the early weeks of the season. Yet his own head coach defended him robustly, pointing out how vital he was in terms of his on-term leadership. His performances were pretty good anyway, and in recent months he has been nothing short of exceptional. He has managed to combine that organisation with his own individual ability, every inch the leader of the team. A joy to watch since sparking that Swansea comeback with a brilliant goal. 8.5 | Frank Reid

11. Salis Abdul Samed
Samed missed a lot of football with injury and has found it tough to find his best level since. Still time to make a significant impact in the promotion push but so far hasn't had the impact fans hoped given his pedigree. 4 | Frank Reid

12. Alan Browne
Injury has meant that Browne hasn't had the impact he would have hoped for when signing from Preston North End. When available, he's brought composure, energy and very welcome experience to the fold. Will hope for a strong end to the campaign now that he's back fully fit. 5.5 Photo: Frank Reid
