It has been an excellent start to the campaign for Sunderland and Regis Le Bris, with the Black Cats currently sitting top of the Championship in the second international break.
With nine games played, it’s the first chance to pause and reflect on the campaign so far. Sunderland have impressed fans and neutrals alike, but there’s still more to come from many in the squad. Here, Phil Smith gives his ratings so far... Only players currently in the senior squad who have made a competitive appearance so far this season are included.

5. Luke O'Nien
Continues to display a remarkable willingness and capacity to improve. Established himself as a strong central defender for the level in and out of possession, and has also contributed important goals along the way. Never misses a game and rarely dips below a high level of performance. 8 | Kian Abdullah/Huw Evans Agency

6. Chris Mepham
Recently dropped out of the side with Le Bris feeling his heavy workload since arriving at the club was maybe having an impact, but his impact on and off the pitch this season has been massive. A top Championship defender and a brilliant signing. 8 | Chris Mepham

7. Trai Hume
Continues to be one of the most consistent and dependable performers in Sunderland's side. Has been in particularly impressive form of late, consistenly making goal contributions from deep. Even if his form dips every now and then, he remains one of the best defensive full backs in the division. Genuinely one of the all-time Sunderland transfer bargains. 8 | Frank Reid

8. Leo Hjelde
Quite a hard season to assess. That he has made 11 appearances, often trusted to help see out very important games, shows that Le Bris rates him highly. Is also known to be one of the best trainers at the club. Will just be frustrated that he hasn't been able to force more regular starts. 5 | Ian Horrocks
