Eight of the top ten secured wins, with a number of dominant performances. The only two sides not to win, Doncaster and Coventry City, played out a predictably tight draw that underlined the poise with which both sides have started the campaign. At the top, there were some big results for Portsmouth and Accrington Stanley, who bounced back from some concerning results with key wins. Here, Phil Smith runs through the results as usual to try and identify some of the key trends in the division...
5. 17. Gillingham (-2)
Two defeats in two and this one far more concerning than the narrow defeat to Ipswich Town. Heavily beaten by Oxford United, creating little and shipping three. Photo: Bryn Lennon
6. 18. Tranmere Rovers (-2)
A bad result but in truth, they competed well enough against Ipswich Town, beaten by a second-half flurry of goals from currently the most clinical side in the league. Dropped down the table but recent performances suggest they have more threat about them than the teams at the bottom, battling hard through a tough run of fixtures. Photo: Charlie Crowhurst
7. 17. Accrington Stanley (+2)
One of the most important results of the weekend, with John Coleman's side ending a winless streak to put some daylight between themselves and Southend at the bottom. Should have extended their one-goal lead further but held out comfortably, with Colby Bishop scoring in another performance that underlined what a smart signing he has been, stepping up from the National League North. 8. 16. Portsmouth (+4)
An underwhelming first half had fears deepening at Fratton Park but they were able to grind out a vital win thanks to Brett Pitman's goal. Still much to be done, but a clean sheet will be of particular delight for Kenny Jackett, who has struggled to establish any continuity or consistency at the back. Moving Oli Hawkins into defence looked an inspired call before he picked up an injury in midweek, set to be out for six weeks. Christian Burgess and Sean Raggett got the job done to give their manager some welcome relief. Photo: Bryn Lennon
